Earlier today, Alabama State Superintendent of Education Dr. Eric Mackey held a press conference to provide certain details related to Alabama's "Roadmap to Reopening Schools." Local superintendents from across the state received this plan earlier this week at the annual conference of Alabama school superintendents. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Denise Woods and I represented MSCS at this meeting.
At present, our district leadership team is still digesting the information from Dr. Mackey and holding discussions about how the state's plan will impact our local reopening. As of today, MSCS continues to plan for an early August start date. It is possible that our Board of Education, next week, will consider a revision to the academic calendar to start school later than August 6 to provide more time to prepare for the reopening of our school district.
As school opens in the fall, please know that MSCS will be implementing practical health and wellness procedures in coordination with the state department of education and public health officials to mitigate the spread of COVID19. As always, your child's safety and wellbeing are of utmost importance as we also work to provide a high quality educational experience.
Like other districts across the state, we are conducting a survey of our families about the reopening of schools. This information will be vital to us as we make decisions about what school will look like this fall. Please take the time to participate in the survey below at your earliest convenience to help us plan appropriately for the "new normal" of teaching and learning in the age of COVID19.
